What Is Motor Neurone Disease?

Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive illness that damages the brain and spinal cord. It affects the nervous system by breaking down nerve cells and disrupting the way motor neurons send signals to the body. When motor neurone disease affects a person’s ability to move, speak, or breathe, it can lead to difficulties with independence.

There are around 5,000 people in the UK living with motor neurone disease MND. While it can affect adults of any age, it usually develops later in life. Early symptoms often include slurred speech, muscle weakness, and muscle cramps. As the disease progresses, other progressive symptoms such as muscle wasting, swallowing difficulties, or difficulty speaking may appear.

There is no known cure for neurodegenerative disease, but there are ways to manage the support required. Treatments include pain management, symptom control, and the use of communication aids. Speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals work together to provide appropriate support. In some cases, a feeding tube, assisted ventilation, or non-invasive ventilation may be recommended by a respiratory consultant.

Working with the Motor Neurone Disease Association, NHS teams, and specialist palliative care services ensures access to medical support, psychological support, and complementary therapies that help improve overall well-being.

A Day In The Life With Asumah

“Every day I provide both practical and emotional support for people with motor neurone disease. Communication and companionship are important, and I make sure to listen as much as I speak. I help with exercises, encourage safe movement, and assist with nutrition and medication. I also support personal care needs and provide reassurance, focusing on their comfort and well-being. Watching a loved one adapt to a life-changing illness is not easy, but knowing I can provide support makes my role rewarding.”

The Benefits Of Motor Neurone Disease Home Care

Receiving MND care at home allows you to remain in familiar surroundings while receiving the specialist care you need. Many people want to stay in their own home rather than move to a care home, and we can help you respect that choice.

As the condition progresses, we help with daily activities such as cooking, cleaning, and personal care. Our care services are designed to adapt as needs change, whether that involves hourly care, live-in care, or complex care. We also offer access to specialist palliative care, nursing care, and support from a wider clinical team.

When we first meet, we consult with you and your family to understand what kind of support is required. We then create a care plan or advanced care plan tailored to your goals. Our role is to provide support, maintain safety, and deliver palliative care that enhances comfort. We aim to improve the quality of life while protecting independence, even as the disease progresses.

By working closely with healthcare professionals, such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals, we ensure access to the appropriate support. Our network includes NHS services, specialist palliative care, and oversight from organisations to ensure standards of specialist care.

More reasons to choose Tiggo Care

Our Care packages are bespoke

At Tiggo Care we understand how precious your loved one is to you and how unique they are. We also appreciate how overwhelming it can be to research and source the most suitable type of care.

We fundamentally believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ care package and like to work with you and your loved one to understand your specific requirements. We’ll then create a tailored care package and match your relative with their ideal carer.

We're fully regulated

Unlike some other care providers, we are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission. This means we are regularly inspected, rated and audited to ensure we are a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led organisation, committed to delivering the best possible care.

We’re also proud members of the Homecare Association, the U.K’s membership body for home care providers, which holds organisations to a high set of standards and requests them to abide by a strict code of practice

Our carers are fully vetted & trained

At Tiggo Care, all of our carers undergo a rigorous recruitment and induction process. They are fully vetted and background checked, with all references followed up. Our carers undertake their training on the best eLearning system currently available within the UK care market, ensuring they are well placed to deliver the best possible service. Specialist training courses such as moving and handling, medications and basic life support are also completed by our carers face to face, as we feel these courses are more effective when delivered in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you live at home with motor neurone disease?

Yes. With the right kind of mind care, motor neurone disease care at home makes it possible to remain in your own home for many years. As the condition progresses, you may need extra support, including medical support, nursing care, or specialist palliative care. Access to NHS services and guidance from healthcare professionals helps ensure safe care in familiar surroundings.

Can motor neurone disease symptoms come and go?

Motor neurone disease symptoms do not usually come and go. Instead, they are progressive symptoms that gradually worsen as the disease progresses. Early symptoms such as muscle weakness, muscle cramps, or slurred speech may first appear in one part of the body, but over time, the condition progresses, and symptom management becomes more complex. A coordinated clinical team ensures regular reviews and the right support is always in place.

How do you help someone with motor neurone disease?

Supporting someone with motor neurone disease requires personalised care. This may include help with personal care, use of communication aids, and regular visits from speech and language therapists or occupational therapists. We also provide practical and emotional support, psychological support, and help with pain management. The aim is to provide support that respects the person’s ability and maintains as much independence as possible.

Can Tiggo Care provide a full-time live-in care assistant for someone with motor neurone disease?

Yes. We can arrange MND care that includes a full-time live-in care assistant. This option allows for continuous motor neurone disease care at home, ensuring the support required for daily tasks, personal care, and access to specialist care. Our care packages are flexible, from hourly care to complex care, and can involve collaboration with MND care co, clinical team members, and other healthcare professionals.
