What Is A Learning Disability?

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have learning disabilities, and approximately 1.2 million of them are adults.

A person with a learning disability has a reduced intellectual ability and may have difficulties with everyday activities, such as household tasks, socialising, or managing money. People with learning disabilities often need more time to learn new skills, understand complicated information, and interact with people. All learning disabilities are lifelong. However, with the right support, a person with a learning disability can lead an independent and full life.

Learning disabilities can be mild, moderate, severe, or profound, and the level of support required depends on the individual. Learning disabilities should not be confused with learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, or neurodevelopmental conditions, such as ADHD.

A day in the life with Ana

"One of my favourite things about being a support worker is the conversations I have with clients. I love hearing their stories. Sometimes we go out into the community for a coffee or a walk in the park. Other days we stay at home and chat while doing light everyday activities."

The Benefits Of Learning Disability Support At Home

Receiving support at home gives you more choice and control. Our person-centred support means clients with learning disabilities remain in familiar environments, close to family and friends and surrounded by meaningful possessions. This continuity provides crucial stability and has a positive impact on their emotional and mental health. We offer practical support that is a world away from the rigid schedules often found in residential care or a supported living complex.

Arranging professional help from a support worker also relieves pressure on families. Supporting people with learning disabilities is a journey, and our services can provide guidance and access to helpful resources. Whether you need short breaks for respite, long-term regular home visits, or full-time live-in assistance, we are here to help. Our goal is to make your family’s everyday life as enjoyable and independent as possible.

More reasons to choose Tiggo Care

Our Care packages are bespoke

At Tiggo Care we understand how precious your loved one is to you and how unique they are. We also appreciate how overwhelming it can be to research and source the most suitable type of care.

We fundamentally believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ care package and like to work with you and your loved one to understand your specific requirements. We’ll then create a tailored care package and match your relative with their ideal carer.

We're fully regulated

Unlike some other care providers, we are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission. This means we are regularly inspected, rated and audited to ensure we are a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led organisation, committed to delivering the best possible care.

We’re also proud members of the Homecare Association, the U.K’s membership body for home care providers, which holds organisations to a high set of standards and requests them to abide by a strict code of practice

Our carers are fully vetted & trained

At Tiggo Care, all of our carers undergo a rigorous recruitment and induction process. They are fully vetted and background checked, with all references followed up. Our carers undertake their training on the best eLearning system currently available within the UK care market, ensuring they are well placed to deliver the best possible service. Specialist training courses such as moving and handling, medications and basic life support are also completed by our carers face to face, as we feel these courses are more effective when delivered in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is live-in care available for individuals with a learning disability?

Yes. Our live-in care and supported living options offer continuous help in familiar home settings. This means support with daily routines, personal care, and everyday activities while staying connected to family and friends.

How do you support people with learning disabilities at home or in supported living?

Support for people with learning disabilities should be flexible and personalised. It may include help with cooking, cleaning, and other household tasks, whether at home or in a supported living environment. Carers can also help clients explore activities outside the home, attend appointments, and access helpful resources in the local community.

What support can a carer offer, and what resources are available?

A support worker can assist with personal care, household tasks, and community activities. They can also connect people with helpful resources, such as local groups, social events, and specialist advice services.

How do you support people with behavioural challenges, and what resources are available?

Remaining calm and patient is key when supporting someone with a learning disability. We work to understand each person’s triggers, offerclear choices, and reinforce positive behaviours through consistent, respectful support. We also signpost families to practical resources to help them learn tools to manage their loved one’s behavioural challenges and improve the family’s quality of life.
