Over 200,000 people undergo joint replacement surgery procedures in the UK every year, including hip replacement surgery and knee replacement. These operations often involve a stay in the recovery room followed by hospital discharge, after which the work truly begins—at home.
Most patients are advised by their healthcare team to follow a strict rehabilitation programme for several weeks. In practice, this means fatiguing physical activity, resistance training or guided movements, and regular use of assistive devices like walkers or crutches. Having assistance and support makes these tasks less daunting.
It’s not just about doing exercises—basic daily activities like cooking, washing, or even walking to other rooms can feel difficult, especially with severe swelling or stiffness. It is also important to avoid sitting for long periods and to reduce swelling by elevating your leg as advised.
Our carers can help reduce the risk of blood clots, offer support with prescribed routines, and assist with equipment like grab bars, a shower chair, or a raised toilet seat. We also help manage pain, reduce swelling, and support a successful recovery.
We make sure you can avoid hazards such as loose wires, throw rugs, or uneven flooring, which can be especially dangerous after surgery. With the right care in place, you can start walking again and return to normal activities at your own pace.
The wait for orthopaedic surgery can stretch for several weeks, sometimes up to 18 weeks. During this time, muscle strength may decline and hip joint pain may increase. Some people even become high risk for falls or accidents while waiting for a new hip or artificial joint.
Our home care team can step in early to provide support with household chores, meal preparation, and shopping, reducing pressure before the surgery. If pain is affecting movement, we’ll help you navigate the home safely by offering tools like orthopaedic chairs or portable commodes, and help to remove loose throw rugs or loose wires that increase your fall risk.
We can also help you arrange your space so that you only need to move between one room or the same floor if stairs are difficult. By taking early action and arranging help before surgery, you reduce the likelihood of delays due to falls or injuries. It’s about giving you the best chance for a safe and smooth hip replacement recovery.

At Tiggo Care we understand how precious your loved one is to you and how unique they are. We also appreciate how overwhelming it can be to research and source the most suitable type of care.
We fundamentally believe that there is no ‘one size fits all’ care package and like to work with you and your loved one to understand your specific requirements. We’ll then create a tailored care package and match your relative with their ideal carer.
Unlike some other care providers, we are fully regulated by the Care Quality Commission. This means we are regularly inspected, rated and audited to ensure we are a safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led organisation, committed to delivering the best possible care.
We’re also proud members of the Homecare Association, the U.K’s membership body for home care providers, which holds organisations to a high set of standards and requests them to abide by a strict code of practice
At Tiggo Care, all of our carers undergo a rigorous recruitment and induction process. They are fully vetted and background checked, with all references followed up. Our carers undertake their training on the best eLearning system currently available within the UK care market, ensuring they are well placed to deliver the best possible service. Specialist training courses such as moving and handling, medications and basic life support are also completed by our carers face to face, as we feel these courses are more effective when delivered in person.

And that’s it. You’re all set! We’ll introduce you to your loved one’s carer and the whole team, who’ll be able to provide you with all the ongoing support you’ll need.
It can vary depending on your needs, age, mobility limitations, and other health conditions. A younger person might need care for just a few weeks, while an older person undergoing a hip replacement with a condition like osteoporosis might benefit from care for several months to ensure the healing process.
You'll likely need assistive devices like crutches or walkers. Other helpful tools include a shower chair, raised toilet seat, grab bars, toilet seat risers, sock aids, and reachers. You'll also want to remove loose throw rugs and remove loose wires, which can increase the chance of tripping.
It's advisable to inform your dentist that you've had a hip replacement, as they may recommend taking antibiotics before certain dental work to prevent infection. Always follow the advice of your doctor immediately and your dentist.
Managing daily activities alone is often very difficult after a hip surgery or replacement surgery. Even simple tasks like bathing or dressing may require help, especially during the first few weeks. That’s why it’s important to organise formal or informal support as part of your recovery plan.
After hip replacement surgery, stairs can be a challenge. You might be able to manage one or two steps with support using your non-operated leg. Still, many people need to limit movement to the first floor and avoid uneven flooring during recovery. Following guidelines is very important to reduce falls. A physiotherapist or occupational therapist will offer guidance on when and how to use stairs safely. Physical medicine may help you relearn safe movement techniques and reduce pain.
